In 2021, Pippa Bennett-Warner and Pippa Vosper began developing their short film ‘22+1’ to confront the devastating statistics and lived experiences of women of colour in the maternal health space.
Drawing on Pippa Vosper’s own experience of late miscarriage, later chronicled in her book Beyond Grief: Navigating Pregnancy and Baby Loss, and teaming up with Pippa Bennett-Warner, they spoke to many Black women who had lost babies during pregnancy. From those conversations, it became clear to them that the racial disparities were, in many cases, more deeply layered and traumatising due to the treatment these women received in the healthcare system.
Together, Pippa Bennett-Warner and Pippa Vosper raised the finance themselves, directing and lead producing the film respectively, with an incredible cast and crew supporting them. The result of these years of work is 22+1, a film they hope will raise awareness, ignite conversation, and ultimately serve as a call to action.
